Mutton-Fat Jade: The Most Prized White Nephrite

Mutton-fat jade (羊脂玉, yángzhī yù) is the most coveted grade of white nephrite— and the material that built Hetian jade's reputation. The name says it all: the finest pieces look like a slab of warm white suet, with a soft, almost oily glow rather than a glassy shine.

What makes jade "mutton-fat"

• Colour — a warm, even white (often with a faint cream or yellowish warmth), not a cold, chalky white.
• Lustre — a gentle, oily / waxy sheen, the hallmark trait.
• Texture — extremely fine and dense; the structure is almost invisible to the eye.
• Translucency — softly translucent, glowing when backlit rather than transparent.
• Purity — minimal cotton, cracks or impurities.

Why it's so expensive

Genuine high-grade mutton-fat jade is rare, and the qualities above are hard to find together in one clean, sizeable piece. That scarcity — plus deep cultural prestige — pushes fine yangzhi to the top of the nephrite price scale.

How to avoid being fooled
